Artist Deej is a highly skilled tattooist specialising in Tā Moko, Polynesian tribal tattoos. Originally from New Zealand, Deej brings extensive cultural knowledge and artistic understanding to every custom tattoo he creates at The Garrison Tattoo Inn in Maitland, NSW.

With deep respect for Māori culture, Deej specialises in designs inspired by the rich traditions of Toi Māori (Māori art). While his primary knowledge and expertise lies within Toi Māori design, Deej also has a strong interest in working with Pacific Island tattoo styles including Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Hawaiian, Niuean, Tahitian and Cook Island traditions. Each design is custom drawn freehand, ensuring every piece is completely unique and thoughtfully created to reflect the personal story of the individual wearing it.

Deej’s process goes beyond simply tattooing a design. Every tattoo experience is approached with meaning, respect and intention. Before beginning the tattoo, Deej performs a Karakia (prayer) — a moment to prepare both the artist and the client, aligning the energy and acknowledging the story that has been shared.

Throughout the tattoo process, Deej explains the symbolism and meaning behind the patterns and elements within the design, ensuring the wearer fully understands the story that is being permanently expressed through the tattoo.
